Ragnarok Online is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) based on Norse Mythology, and modeled after the Korean manga "Ragnarok." Gravity Corp and Lee Myoungjin developed the game, which is set in the mythical world of Rune-Midgard (but now encompasses a number of other lands as well).

It is a simple game with a simple style: 2D sprites on a 3D background, which gives the game visual uniqueness among the masses of MMORPGs. The game stresses the importance of teamwork, and encourages all players to join parties and guilds. Now several years out of it's alpha and beta beginnings, the game is very popular all around the world.

The blacksmith is an extremely versatile class. It is the 2-1 (second class, first "set"; the 2-2 classes were added later in the game to compliment the 2-1 classes) class of the merchant first class. When a blacksmith reaches level 99/50, they can "transcend" back into a high novice, change into a high merchant, then class change into a Whitesmith/Mastersmith, an extremely powerful battle character.

Merchants are masters in buying, selling, and trading, complimented with a few battle skills. They're most important skills are their abilities to Discount anything from an NPC up to 24% off at level 10, and the ability to Overcharge any NPC 24% over the standard NPC price at level 10. They also have the Vending skill, which allows them to open a shop to sell items easier. Their battle skill is called Mammonite, which remains the most powerful damage skill a blacksmith has until transcendence. It uses 1000 zeny (the currency of Rune Midgard) at level 10 to deal a devastating blow to an enemy. Merchants are wonderful characters, but they don't really shine until they turn into blacksmiths (2-1) or alchemists (2-2).

Blacksmiths are far more varied and versatile than the sometimes clumsy feeling merchant. Blacksmiths can go "full forge," an extremely dedicated path which requires hours of slow training with non battle stats (Dex and Luk, the two stats which contribute to forging success). Once they are high enough, they can forge elemental and strong (very strong (vs) or very very strong (vvs) weapons for all classes, with the exceptions of weapons which cannot be forged (example, katars for assassins and whips/intruments for dancers/bards). Blacksmiths can also go pure battle, where they become the class that con potentially outdamage all other classes. They have a huge assortment of buffs and attacks which help them to battle faster, be stronger, and debilitate the enemy. Blacksmiths can also go "battleforge," where they are able to do both but don't excell in either. Stat point wise, there are agi and vit builds, along with agi>vit and vit>agi hybrids, but most battlesmiths know that str is the most important stat. Whereas they will never get the flee of an assassin or the HP of a knight, our high damage output is really where the blacksmith shines.

Whitesmiths (called Mastersmiths in iRO) are generally battle characters, as they gain far more battle skills by transcending, and their forging skills are left relatively unchanged. Whitesmiths are pumped up blacksmiths with even more battle skills, including the feared Cart Termination/High Speed Cart Ram, one of the most damaging skills in the game.
